Medieval history is the study of Europe and the wider Mediterranean and Eurasian world roughly between the dissolution of the western Roman Empire and the Renaissance — an era historians once dismissed as a "middle" age between antiquity and modernity, but now read as a formative period of state-building, religious transformation, and economic change.

The problem of the name

The term itself encodes a polemic. Italian humanists coined the media aetas / medium aevum to demarcate a barbarous interval separating their own recovery of classical litterae from antiquity; Petrarch's metaphor of tenebrae (darkness) is the ur-source. Christoph Cellarius's Historia Medii Aevi (1688) institutionalized the tripartite ancient–medieval–modern scheme in university curricula. Every serious periodization since is a critique of this inheritance. The expert operates knowing that "medieval" is a retrospective container, not an actor's category — no one in 1200 believed themselves to be living in the middle of anything.

Conventional termini — 476 (deposition of Romulus Augustulus) to 1453 (fall of Constantinople) or 1492 — are heuristics that dissolve under scrutiny. 476 was a non-event contemporaneously: Odoacer ruled as nominal agent of the eastern emperor Zeno, and the western imperial title had already been vacated in practice. The real questions concern which transformations we privilege.

Late Antiquity and the end of Rome

The most consequential historiographical shift of the last century was the elaboration of Late Antiquity as a period in its own right (roughly the third to eighth centuries), largely through Peter Brown's The World of Late Antiquity (1971) and The Making of Late Antiquity (1978). This reframing displaced the Gibbonian narrative of "decline and fall" with one of transformation, continuity of Mediterranean koine, and religious creativity — the rise of the holy man, the cult of relics, and episcopal urbanism.

The reframing provoked a counter-reaction. Bryan Ward-Perkins (The Fall of Rome and the End of Civilization, 2005) and Peter Heather (The Fall of the Roman Empire, 2005) reasserted rupture, marshalling archaeological indices — collapse of pottery distribution, coin circulation, roof-tile use, cattle bone size — as proxies for a genuine material contraction, and reasserting exogenous violence (Hunnic pressure, Gothic and Vandal Völkerwanderung) as decisive. The debate turns on whether one weights cultural-religious continuity or economic-demographic disruption, and on the vexed question of ethnogenesis: the Vienna School (Reinhard Wenskus, Herwig Wolfram, Walter Pohl) treats barbarian gentes as fluid, polyethnic "Traditionskerne" constituted by narrative traditions rather than biological descent — a view sharply contested by the "Toronto School" reading (Walter Goffart, and more polemically the critiques in Andrew Gillett's edited On Barbarian Identity, 2002), which suspects that the Stämme of the sources are literary constructs of Roman ethnography.

The Pirenne thesis and the shape of the early Middle Ages

Henri Pirenne's Mahomet et Charlemagne (posthumous, 1937) proposed that Germanic settlement did not break Mediterranean economic unity — that Merovingian Gaul remained plugged into a Roman commercial world — and that the true rupture came with Islamic expansion in the seventh century, which severed the western basin and turned the economic axis northward, making the Carolingian polity possible: "Sans Mahomet, Charlemagne est inconcevable."

The thesis remains a productive framework even as its specifics have been dismantled. Numismatic and archaeological evidence (Maurice Lombard, then decisively the material synthesized by Michael McCormick's Origins of the European Economy, 2001, and Chris Wickham's Framing the Early Middle Ages, 2005) shows that Mediterranean exchange contracted well before Islam, driven by fiscal and demographic collapse, while Islamic polities in fact sustained and stimulated long-distance trade. Wickham's comparative-materialist reconstruction — grounded in a systematic comparison of fiscal states, aristocratic wealth, and peasant modes of production across the post-Roman world — is now the reigning synthesis, foregrounding the fiscal transition from a tax-based to a land-based aristocratic economy as the central structural change.

Carolingian order and its dissolution

The Carolingian ascendancy — Pippin III's 751 deposition of the Merovingians with papal sanction, the imperial coronation of Charlemagne on 25 December 800, the renovatio of learning associated with Alcuin, Theodulf, and the Aachen court — poses the question of state capacity. The Carolingian Renaissance is now read less as antiquarian revival than as a program of correctio: standardization of script (Caroline minuscule, the ancestor of humanist and thus modern Roman type), liturgy, and text (the classical corpus survives overwhelmingly through Carolingian copies). Rosamond McKitterick's work on literacy and administration has argued for a more textually saturated, governmentally serious Carolingian polity than earlier scholarship allowed.

Its fragmentation after the Treaty of Verdun (843), amid Viking, Magyar, and Saracen incursions, sets up the century's most contentious debate.

The Feudal Revolution debate

Whether a "feudal revolution" (mutation féodale) transformed Europe around the year 1000 is perhaps the sharpest fault line in the field. Georges Duby's Mâconnais studies, extended by Jean-Pierre Poly and Éric Bournazel, argued for a rapid collapse of public (Carolingian) authority circa 980–1030, the privatization of the ban by castellans, the imposition of new seigneurial exactions (mauvaises coutumes), and the reduction of a formerly free peasantry to dependency — a genuine social rupture. Thomas Bisson's 1994 Past & Present article "The 'Feudal Revolution'" gave the model its most forceful English statement, emphasizing an efflorescence of unregulated violence.

Dominique Barthélemy (La mutation de l'an mil, a-t-elle eu lieu?, 1997) led the "mutationist" counter-attack, arguing the "revolution" is an artifact of a documentary mutation — a change in the genre and survival of charters that makes previously undocumented realities suddenly visible. The ensuing Past & Present exchange (Barthélemy, Stephen White, Timothy Reuter, Chris Wickham, replying to Bisson) is required reading precisely because it stages the general problem of inferring social change from evidential change.

Feudalism as a concept

Overlapping this is Susan Reynolds's frontal assault in Fiefs and Vassals (1994), which argued that "feudalism" — the pyramidal model of fiefs held in return for vassalic military service, systematized by seventeenth-century jurists and by F. L. Ganshof's Qu'est-ce que la féodalité? (1944) — is a post-medieval construct projected onto sources that do not support it; the feudum as a coherent institution largely postdates the twelfth-century Lombard legal compilation the Libri Feudorum. Combined with Elizabeth A. R. Brown's earlier "The Tyranny of a Construct" (1974), this has made "feudalism" a term expert writers now deploy with explicit caveats or abandon for more precise vocabulary (lordship, seigneurie, vassalage, honorial community). Marxist usage — feudalism as a mode of production defined by extra-economic coercion of a peasant surplus (Marc Bloch's Société féodale, 1939–40; Rodney Hilton; the Brenner debate on agrarian class structure) — is a separate analytic that survives the demolition of the juridical construct.

The central Middle Ages: growth, reform, renaissance

The eleventh through thirteenth centuries constitute the period of maximal expansion. Demographic and agrarian growth — heavy plow, three-field rotation, watermill diffusion (the Domesday survey of 1086 records some 6,000 mills in England), assarting and colonization (the German Ostsiedlung) — underwrote urbanization and the "commercial revolution" (Roberto Lopez's phrase) of Mediterranean and North Sea trade, the rise of Genoa, Venice, and the Champagne fairs, and instruments of credit that R. S. Lopez and others traced.

Three great reorderings coincide:

  • The Gregorian Reform and the Investiture Contest, from Leo IX and Humbert of Silva Candida through Gregory VII's Dictatus Papae (1075) and Henry IV's Canossa (1077), which — in Harold Berman's ambitious Law and Revolution (1983) — inaugurated the separation of ecclesiastical and secular jurisdiction that seeded Western legal modernity.
  • The Twelfth-Century Renaissance, Charles Homer Haskins's coinage (1927): the recovery of Aristotle and Greco-Arabic science via Toledo and Sicily (Gerard of Cremona, the reception of Averroes), the scholastic method (Abelard's Sic et Non), the birth of universities (Bologna, Paris, Oxford), and the revival of Roman law (the Bolognese glossators, Irnerius).
  • The consolidation of governance, the "administrative kingship" of Angevin England (the Exchequer, the common law, Glanvill and Bracton) and Capetian France, feeding the debate about the medieval origins of the modern state (Joseph Strayer, and the genèse de l'État moderne research program).

Crisis, Divergence, and the late Middle Ages

The fourteenth century supplies the classic "crisis" narrative: the end of the Medieval Warm Period and onset of the Little Ice Age, the Great Famine of 1315–1322, and the Black Death of 1347–1351, which killed perhaps 40–60% of the European population. Historians dispute both cause and consequence. The pathogen — long assumed Yersinia pestis — has been confirmed by ancient-DNA work (aDNA from Charterhouse Square, London, and elsewhere), settling one debate while opening questions of transmission dynamics and the plague's Central Asian origins (recent aDNA from the Chüy Valley, Kyrgyzstan, 1338–39). Its economic aftermath frames the Brenner debate: did post-plague labor scarcity liberate the western European peasantry (raising real wages, dissolving serfdom west of the Elbe) while the same shock intensified the "second serfdom" east of it? Robert Brenner's answer privileged pre-existing class structure and property relations over demographic determinism (contra the neo-Malthusian Postan thesis).
